Difference (2009)
EXPOSITION
This work represents a dilemma faced by many young people, including myself. We might be faced at least once with such a problem before deciding on a future career. I struggled with it when I temporary left school for one year.
Viewer sees a cube, and stands on one of its side. Each side of the cube has a cultural value which people desire. The desires are carved with Chinese characters on wood blocks, which represent wealth, pleasure, power, and honor. The wood blocks rise up by solenoid valves when viewer stretches their hand to reach their favorite value. By reaching for one’s desire, other benefits also follow.
Each viewer has a different position in relation to the piece as well as, different dreams and tastes. Nevertheless, most youth of this era tend to be keen on finding financial wealth. I want to say that if they determine their way of life not by social concerns but with what they truly want as a person, those worries could be solved through seeking their own dream.
